The Rocky Mountain Small Organic Farm Project
Our research for the field seasons of 2004, 2005, and 2006 will primarily involve The Rocky Mountain Small Organic Farm Project. Eight acres of organic production is taking place at the Horticulture Field Research Center in Fort Collins, Colorado. The project involves establishing an organic research and demonstration facility for the Intermountain region. We will address the special challenges to organic systems through the use of vegetable, flower, and small fruit variety trials, studies of new techniques for fertility, pest, and disease management (for example by using green manures), and the development of enterprise budgets catered especially for small farmers. The summer of 2005 also involved the establishment of a campus CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program.
Site information (soils, weather, etc.) about the Horticulture Research Center - the home place of the Rocky Mountain Small Organic Farm Project can be found on our Study Area web page. We would like to thank several contributors to the Rocky Mountain Small Organic Farm Project including Johnny's Selected Seeds (50% discount on flower and vegetable seeds), Corona Seeds (artichoke seeds), Greenheart Farms (organic celery transplants), Agricultural Products, Inc. (lay-flat tubing and couplers), and the Blackmore Company (CAN-DUIT seeder).
The Rocky Mountain Small Organic Farm Project consists of the following subprojects. Click on a link below for more information about each of these:
