Alternative Techniques for Weed and Verticillium Control

Project Leader: Brian Coleman, President of Ruby Mountain Nursery, LaJara

Technical Advisor: Robert Davidson, Agricultural Extension Agent, Center

Project Year: 2006

Proposal Summary

A significant problem faced by strawberry plant producers in the San Luis Valley is the presence of Verticillium. Fumigation has been the standard treatment, however cost and safety issues are important concerns, and alternatives are being evaluated. In this study, solarization and incorporation of allelopathic cover crops will be evaluated as alternative treatments for Verticillium control.

Chandler, which is a susceptible strawberry variety, will be used as an indicator plant for the trials. Sequential treatments including solarization and cover crops- such as barley, rye, and wheat- will be evaluated.
